The top down firelighting method.
The traditional method of firelighting has been around for centuries, but advancements in technology have allowed for the evolution of the process. With more efficient wood burners, less heat is lost up the chimney and more is radiated into the room.
The top down firelighting technique ensures that the flue heats up faster, eliminating the need to open the appliance door to add fuel to the kindling. This helps prevent the combustion chamber from cooling.
After the kindling has burned through, the flue will be warm, and the logs will be charred, making them easier to ignite.
Here are the steps for upside down firelighting:
- Place two small logs across the fire bed.
- Place five pieces of kindling across the logs, then four pieces laid at a 90-degree angle across the bottom layer and place two firelighters in between the gaps.
- Add another five pieces of kindling laid in the same direction as the bottom layer.
- Set the controls of the appliance to the lighting position and light the firelighters. Close the door of the appliance.
- Gradually warm the flue without producing excessive smoke and pollutants by setting the air controls to the manufacturer’s settings.
- Let the kindling burn until the top of the appliance is warm, then close the primary air control, allowing the kindling to fall between the logs.
- Once the logs are burning well, adjust the burn rate of the appliance and add more logs as needed.
