In an attempt by the Government to reduce the number of deaths caused by the poor installation practices, it has introduced strict measures and minimum standards to improve safety.
The introduction of Document J in April 2002 Building Regulations, therefore, made it a legal requirement to obtain a Building Regulation Certificate of Compliance for all chimney work and stove installations. This usually involves inspection before and after work is completed before a certificate can be issued.
This certificate is now being requested prior to the purchase of any property where a stove has been installed since April 2002. It is not, therefore, something which can be overlooked.
It is always advisable to have a proper site visit and sound advice before even considering the purchase and installation of a stove. Only installers approved by HETAS should be used.
Any non-approved or DIY installers must always contact their local Building Control Department to obtain a proper site inspection and a certificate of compliance necessary to ensure personal safety. This certificate is a requirement of reputable buildings/ household insurers and will be necessary before completion of any future house sale.
